Publicly listed data company LiveRamp's $200 million acquisition of data clean room provider Habu looks set to fire the starting pistol for a more buoyant year of adtech and martech M&A, experts have predicted. He noted that while ad teams aren't using these clean rooms en masse, many have activated them, which bodes well for the Habu acquisition. ID5's technology is deployed by the most online publishers of any identity service, according to Sincera , which measures which adtech companies are used across the industry. LiveRamp, also, could be an acquisition target, Salmon noted, as it builds out new data offerings like the clean rooms it will inherit from Habu. But not everyone is predicting the Habu acquisition will necessarily lead to an influx of M&A around cookieless adtech.

Expanded Nvidia partnership Amazon on Tuesday outlined the details of its deepening partnership with semiconductor firm Nvidia – the global leader in the development of AI chips. In general, Amazon has touted its own AI chips as being a lower-cost option for customers. Nvidia's AI hardware is known to carry a hefty price tag .

2023: The year of chasing yield Investors historically chase after stock performance, but 2023 has been the year of chasing after yield performance. This year, the combined assets under management at money market funds grew to a record $6 trillion. There have been large inflows into short-term Treasury funds like the Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) and, surprisingly, even into long-term Treasury ETFs like the iShares 20+Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT). Still, some think a large chunk of the money in short-term Treasuries and money markets is "scared money" and will be "sticky." Those institutional investors "Don't want any money in cash because it will lag behind the stock market," he told me.

Persistent inflationary pressures have led to depressed levels of consumer spending all year, according to Bank of America. Consumers are still spending — in fact, they're spending more than they are earning — as employment levels and hourly wage growth remain fairly strong . Some analysts see an opportunity to pick up shares of battered-down retail stocks. According to Barclay's Yih, spending levels "almost have to be worse" next year. LPL's Roach similarly expects consumers spending to hit a roadblock in the coming months.

Investors should scoop up shares of medical device provider AtriCure , according to JMP Securities, which expects the company to be a winner in one burgeoning medical device market. AtriCure develops, manufactures and sells devices that are used for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, or Afib; left atrial appendage management, or LAAM; and post-operative pain. The company's stock price has declined just about 19% so far this year, with almost all of that occurring this quarter. ATRC YTD mountain AtriCure stock. Irrational behavior due to concerns over the stability of the U.S. banking system has made Charles Schwab 's stock a cheap investment opportunity, according to value investor Daniel O'Keefe. O'Keefe said this "cash sorting" was mistaken for a bank run. "On the negative side, cash sorting moved back up in August post the July Fed hike, and Ameritrade client attrition around conversion activity also rose considerably." "We believe fears of a reacceleration in cash sorting behavior are overblown," the JPM analysts said in a note to clients on Sept. 20. He initiated a position in Schwab for the value fund, calling it "a phenomenal business" trading at a discount.

Meta's AI initiatives are likely to be a key aspect of how it monetizes products and services going forward, while bringing more users and customers into the AI fold. Whereas Meta's headset is priced for mass-market adoption, Apple's headset is clearly a premium device targeted to those who demand the most cutting-edge technology — such as micro-OLED lenses with eye-tracking capabilities . Similarly, JMP Securities argued that the event "highlights Meta's AI tailwinds," which could "unlock additional advertising budgets with new chat-based customer service." Meanwhile, we expect adoption of Meta's Quest 3 hardware to grow. But the integration of the Meta AI assistant into that platform should ultimately make the glasses a more valuable product over time.

New York CNN —As it churns toward the disaster-prone Sunshine State, Hurricane Idalia could be a litmus test for Florida’s increasingly volatile and expensive insurance landscape. Despite several insurance companies exiting Florida, experts say the state’s residents are still mostly covered this hurricane season. “Florida’s property insurance market remains very volatile, but the insurance industry is well-capitalized to pay Idalia claims,” he added. Enrollment in flood insurance has seen a steady uptick every month since October 2022, according to the latest FEMA data. While Florida has the highest flood insurance enrollment rate of any state, Friedlander said only 18% have flood insurance through either federal or private insurers.

The generative artificial intelligence boom has seen semiconductor stocks soar this year, no more so than Club holding Nvidia (NVDA). We're more cautious on AMD going into its earnings print on Aug. 1, as it doesn't have the same outsized exposure to generative AI technology as Nvidia. Similarly, in a research note Monday, analysts at JMP Securities said that while "demand around generative AI remains extremely robust," elsewhere enterprise IT budgets remain constrained. Semiconductor firms are either basking in the glory of generative AI demand, or working through excess inventory and IT budget-optimization dynamics. And when the semiconductor firms report next month, investors will have a clearer sense on inventory challenges.

Wall Street kicked off the week with bullish takes on several high-flying tech stocks in the portfolio — validating our decision to stick with these mega-caps heading into quarterly earnings. It's also important to understand that some price target raises are just chasing a big move, and that the price reaction to an earnings release has less to do with the results and much more to do with expectations. It's also why Citigroup also put AMD on a "negative catalyst watch," meaning it is negative on the stock heading into earnings. In the analysts' view, Apple has an opportunity to grow its revenue by seven times in the U.S. over the next decade to about $40 billion, while adding 170 million new users. Microsoft What the analysts say: Analysts at Mizuho reiterated their buy rating on Microsoft while taking up their price target to $390 from $360.

New York CNN —Homeowners insurance is becoming more expensive and, in many places, more difficult to find. The companies also blame limits placed on insurance premiums in some states, including California. Insurance premiums nationwide aren’t up significantly – only 1.6% in the last 12 months according to the Consumer Price Index, the government’s main inflation measure. For instance, in Louisiana, 17% of homeowners insurance policyholders had their policies canceled last year, according to an annual report from Louisiana State University. Meanwhile, more than two-thirds of policyholders said homeowners and flood insurance are more expensive in Louisiana than other states.

Analysts are split on how Coinbase shares perform from here as the company enters a battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Others see this development as a major threat to Coinbase's business, going beyond near-term financial implications. Additionally, with the complaint coming a day after the SEC sued Binance , Coinbase is likely to see new trading volumes near term, she added.
